Kevin's Genre TV & Movie Thoughts
My Dragon*Con 2011 Podcasts

My good friend Kenny had me on as his first guest on his new ‘Confessions of a Fanboy’ podcast and we had a real fun discussion.

Dragon*Con 2011 Observations #4

Sorry for the delay in posting another of these updates.  The past couple of days have been a blur of fun. :)

I’ve been a panelist on a few events and we also had the Sharktopus screening on Saturday night as well.  That was a major success.  We filled the room and everyone seemed to have a total blast listening to the comments from myself and Joe Crowe from RevolutionSF.com during the movie and the audience even got involved with the commentary as well.

I’ll put together my notes and cover everything from the con on next week’s Tuning in to Scifi TV podcast.  I also have tentative plans to do some Dragon*Con recap podcasts with two other podcasters so lots of fun discussions to come.  :)

Dragon*Con 2011 Observations #3

First day of the con was a total blast!  No shocker there.  I talked to many people who had great experiences as far as picking up their badges at registration.  Wait times of 10-20 minutes which is awesome to hear.

I had the distinct pleasure of being on two panels that were the opening events in two different tracks on Friday morning.  At 10am I was on the “Do You Like Cheese With Your Syfy?” panel in Kelley’s American Scifi Media track.  We talked all about the Syfy channels original movies.  We had almost a full room and all the panels had some great thoughts to share.  I’ve got a recording of that panel so we should be releasing it on the podcast in the near future.  It’s great to see more and more folks coming to these panels about the Syfy channel movies.  There are lots of us who love these things.  The second opening panel I was on was in the Whedon Universe track at 11:30am.  It was titled “Whedonverse 101”.  I had suggested the idea of a spoiler free panel to introduce the Whedon Universe to folks.  It was great to have the Whedon track director Wayne also on the panel.  It was a standing room only event which was great.  The really awesome part was that when we asked the audience how many of them were first time attendees to the con it was about two thirds of the room!  Love to see when newbies come to the con for the first time.  I also got down to the Save Our Seeker fan table in the Hyatt during the afternoon.  They got the prime spot right off the escalator in the fan table area.  Lots of great stuff there at the table.  Laura and all the volunteers did a great job on that.  Later in the afternoon I attended a panel in the Whedon track entitled “Absolute Power” where the panelists discussed the use and misuse of power in the Buffy/Angel universe.  The five ladies on that panel, including Angie Ninde, did a super job covering the topic in detail.  Excellent panel.  My annual Friday evening tradition at Dragon*Con is to attend the live shadowcasts for Buffy OMWF and Dr Horrible.  Those are can’t miss events with 2,000+ fans in attendance and almost everyone sings along to every song.  The energy in the room is amazing.  Got to hang with my friends Kurt and Jenn Geoppinger in the line ahead of time.  The three of us do the Seeker Cast podcast together.  After that we finished off the night with the Legend of the Seeker costumers meet-up over in the Marriott.  There were probably over 40 people in Seeker costumers which was more than last year.  Fun group of people and lots of great photos taken.  Steve from ScifiGeek.info will post lots of them in the coming weeks.  Now, I’m off for a full day on Saturday too.  :)

Dragon*Con 2011 Observations #2

Had lots of fun on Thursday.  Picking up my badge at registration was the big thing on the to do list.  The line moved much, much, much faster for most folks yesterday than it has in previous years. Unfortunately Mike Falkner and I end up in the line when the system crashed so it took us 2 hours to get through.  Ah well…at least most everyone before and after us had a much shorter wait based on talking to people later in the day.  The rest of the day was mainly spent saying hi to friends who got in early and going by to see some of the track directors that are also friends of mine.  We got the projector setup for the Sat night Sharktopus screening which should be a blast.  Kelley and her staff were busy creating props for our “drive in” theme there in the American Scifi Media track room.  I also spent time with Wayne, Melissa and the rest of the Whedon staff watching them prepare for the Buffy and Dr Horrible shows that are tonight.  Lots of hard working and really nice people there.  Now I’m off to get ready for the two panels that I’m doing this morning.

Dragon*Con 2011 Observations #1

Got in last night (Wed).  Registration opens today and the con begins on Friday morning.  Was very odd walking through the con hotels last night with almost no one here.  I’m so used to only being here when there are 40,000 other people roaming around.  Had a couple of drinks in the Hilton bar last night with friends and Christopher Lloyd came in and sat down at the bar.  You know you must be at Dragon*Con because no one bothered him.  He had a drink or two, met a friend and left.  :)

Very curious how the new bar code system at registration will work out.  Fingers crossed that it will cut down on the wait times.  I’ll head over to registration later and let you all know.
